Project Synopsis

Cursed Catacombs is an atmospheric dungeon crawler that combines exploration with puzzle-solving and trap evasion. Players must navigate through ancient tomb corridors, decipher cryptic scrolls, and avoid deadly traps to reach the treasure vault and escape alive. The game emphasises careful exploration and strategic thinking over combat.

Project Brief

The goal of Cursed Catacombs was to develop an engaging dungeon crawler experience that prioritized environmental storytelling and strategic gameplay over combat mechanics. The project required creating a video game based on a predefined topic "Depth", chosen by Ludum Dare for a game jam.

My Role & Contribution

As part of the Design Team, I contributed to level design, environmental storytelling, texture implementation and the overall world building. My focus was on ensuring the dungeon felt authentic and rewarding to explore, creating a setting where the player can be fully immersed. The goal was to create three different levels, which becomes more difficult after each section. As a team we collectively determined what each level's challenge was going to be and how to enhance overall player enjoyment, but I was the one in charge of placing and building the world around each challenge.

Game Engine: Unreal Engine 5 for rendering and gameplay

3D Modeling: Blender for tomb architecture and props

Textures Sourcing textures and creating unique materials inside Unreal Engine

Level Design: The overall layout and setting creation of the game

Audio Design: Atmospheric sound sourcing for an immersive tomb environment
